About the Film:
After a painful breakup, Clementine (Kate Winslet) undergoes a procedure to erase memories of her former boyfriend Joel (Jim Carrey) from her mind. When Joel discovers that Clementine is going to extremes to forget their relationship, he undergoes the same procedure and slowly begins to forget the woman that he loved. Directed by former music video director Michel Gondry, the visually arresting film explores the intricacy of relationships and the pain of loss.
About the Speaker:
Emily M. Elliott, PhD., is a Professor of Psychology at Louisiana State University. Throughout her career, she has studied the theoretical underpinnings of working memory and attention, as well as how attention and memory interact. She has also studied sounds, which can be either helpful or hurtful to learning, depending on the situation, and the benefits of expertise afforded by musical training. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Louisiana State University. She continued her education and earned a Master of Arts degree in Experimental Psychology and a PhD in Cognition and Neuroscience from the University of Missouri, Columbia. She began her faculty career as an Assistant Professor at Louisiana State University, and she was subsequently promoted to Associate Professor and Full Professor. She serves as the Principal Investigator of the Elliott Attention Recall and Sounds lab (EARS), training undergraduate and graduate students. She has over 60 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, and is a Fellow of the Psychonomic Society and of Division 3 of the American Psychological Association.

The Department of Psychology at Louisiana State University has a long tradition of exceptional research scholarship, education and service – they celebrated their 100-year anniversary in 2008. Their nationally-recognized faculty conduct basic and applied research on a broad variety of topics in psychology and neuroscience. Their outstanding graduate program has five distinct areas: Behavior Analysis, Clinical Psychology, Cognitive and Brain Sciences, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, and School Psychology. Admission to the program is among the most competitive at LSU, and they have approximately 100 graduate students enrolled. Finally, they provide a wide variety of service to the region, the state, and the profession. One prominent example is their Psychological Services Center, which provides affordable mental health services to the local community.
